Ms Orfhlaith O’Sullivan is a graduate of the Medical School in University College Dublin (1999). She commenced her initial postgraduate training in Urology during which time she was awarded her Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, MRCSI and a Masters in Surgery, MCh, by thesis for a body of work investigating the effect of Angiotensin II on human kidney cells. While training in Urology she developed a keen interest in all aspects of pelvic floor dysfunction.
To enhance her ability to fully understand and manage disorders relating to pelvic floor dysfunction, she began training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2006 and was awarded dual Memberships of the Royal College of Physicians Ireland, MRCPI, and the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MRCOG. In addition to training on the National Surgical Training Scheme for Obstetrics and Gynaecology Ms O’Sullivan was the first person to gain the European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and European Urogynaecologic Association, EBCOG/EUGA, certificate for successfully completing an accredited subspecialty fellowship in Urogynaecology at Cork University Maternity Hospital. In 2017 she received her Certificate of Satisfactory Completion Specialty Training, CSCST, from the RCPI as well as her Diploma in Leadership from the RCSI.
Currently her research interests include pelvic floor dysfunction (prolapse and urinary incontinence) and minimally invasive surgery including Robot-assisted surgery. She has published more than twenty peer-reviewed papers, six book chapters. She has been the recipient of awards and prizes for her research both nationally and internationally.
Having been the recipient of world class teaching and training, Ms O’Sullivan appreciates the importance of ensuring standards are maintained and new approaches are embraced such as simulation. To this end she has collaborated with the ASSERT centre in UCC to develop cadaveric surgical skills courses for postgraduate trainees
Fergus is a medical graduate of University College Cork and has trained throughout Ireland, in Melbourne, Toronto and most recently Kings College in London where he obtained his subspecialist training in Maternal and Fetal Medicine while working as Academic Clinical Lecturer. In conjunction with his public and university research commitments, Fergus will be providing a private Obstetrics and Gynaecology service in the Cork Obstetrics and Gynaecology Associates clinic and his clinical practice is undertaken at the Cork University Maternity Hospital.
Fergus is very active in teaching and research and was appointed Senior Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2019. He is Principal Investigator in the INFANT Research Centre. Fergus has published more than 100 scientific papers in some of the leading journals worldwide, written chapters for major medical textbooks, acted as a reviewer for international medical journals, and holds a PhD from University College Cork and a Masters in Epidemiology from the University of London. Fergus has leveraged over one million euro in research funding and has ongoing national and international research collaborations and a research team involving numerous PhD students and other researchers. He regularly teaches medical students and junior doctors and has been invited to give lectures to GPs, midwives and other obstetricians, both in Ireland and internationally.
Within CUMH, Fergus is the clinical lead for the twin pregnancy service, a Maternal and Fetal medicine subspecialist and he also oversees and supports the homebirth and midwifery lead schemes. While his area of specialist interest is Maternal Fetal Medicine including preconceptual counselling, multiple pregnancies and complex obstetrics, he is also trained in general gynaecology. From a gynaecology point of view Fergus performs gynaecology ultrasound in COGA and minimally invasive laparoscopic and hysteroscopic benign gynaecology procedures in CUMH.
Fergus’ practice is modern and evidence-based, with an emphasis on great communication and working together to achieve the best for women and their babies. His practice is a friendly, welcoming environment where he encourages patients to ask questions and to feel comfortable discussing every aspect of their pregnancy and health.
Dr. Richard Horgan
MB BCh BAO BMedSci PhD MRCOG MRCPI
Dr. Richard Horgan is a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with subspecialty training in Maternal Fetal Medicine. His clinical areas of interest are obstetric ultrasound, low and high risk pregnancy, fetal growth, placental complications of pregnancy, antenatal care and benign gynaecology.
Dr. Richard Horgan graduated in Medicine from University College Cork in 1998. His specialist registrar training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology was in Ireland. During this time he also completed his PhD Thesis after three years of full-time research into abnormal fetal growth, between University College Cork and the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. He has published and presented his research nationally and internationally. Dr. Horgan has also been involved in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level throughout his career.
His subspecialty training in Maternal Fetal Medicine was in Toronto, Canada. Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto is the largest high risk obstetric unit in Canada and the University of Toronto fellowship is considered one of the most prestigious and competitive high-risk training fellowships internationally.
Dr. Horgan commenced as a Consultant Obstetrician Gynaecologist at University Hospital Kerry in 2014. At University Hospital Kerry, Richard led the Perinatal Medicine Team with responsibility for High-Risk and Fetal Medicine Clinics and established a Fetal Medicine service including anatomy scanning. Following setting up this service among others, Richard was recruited as a Maternal Fetal Medicine Consultant by the Rotunda Hospital in 2017. Richard has now returned to Cork and taken up a post as Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Cork University Maternity Hospital. Richard’s clinical practice is undertaken at Cork University Maternity Hospital and at Cork Obstetrics and Gynaecology Associates.
Richard welcomes referrals for pre-conception counselling, prenatal diagnosis and testing, antenatal care, antenatal and gynaecology ultrasound and general gynaecology. He is also delighted to care for healthy mothers and babies.

Dr. Adriana Olaru
MB BCh MSc MRCPI MRCOG
Dr Olaru works as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist In Cork University Maternity Hospital. Her clinical interests include management of benign gynaecological conditions such as abnormal uterine bleeding, fibroids, PCOS, ovarian cysts and obstetric/antenatal care.
Dr Olaru is a medical graduate of University of Medicine and Pharmacology “Iuliu Hatieganu” Cluj Napoca, Romania in 2007. She began training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Romania in 2008 where she worked for 3 years. In 2011, Dr Olaru moved to Ireland and continued training in the speciality .
She was awarded a masters in Obstetrics & Gynaecology with University College Cork in 2017 and has dual membership of the Royal College of Physicians Ireland (MRCPI) 2016 and Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (MRCOG) 2022.
Dr Olaru has completed a Labour Ward Fellowship in the National Maternity Hospital in 2020 and a Complex Gynaecology Fellowship in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital In Dublin 2021. She was awarded Specialist Registration with the Medical Council in 2021.
Dr Olaru has been working as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist since 2021 in Our Lady of Lourdes Drogheda Hospital and Cork University Maternity Hospital.
Within Cork University Maternity Hospital, Adriana is the clinical lead of the Ambulatory Gynae Service. Her areas of expertise are benign gynaecology (open and minimally invasive surgical procedures: hysteroscopic resections of fibroids and polyps, mirena coil removal and insertion, laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy, oophorectomy, hysterectomy) and antenatal care/delivery.
