Smears & Colposcopy
A cervical smear is a screening test to examine the surface cells from the cervix. If these cells are abnormal then a repeat smear may be performed or a referral for a colposcopy examination may be made. Colposcopy is a specialist examination of the cervix using a magnifying telescope, this can detect precancerous cells that will be monitored to see if they resolve spontaneously or require treatment.
We do not offer a private colposcopy service at COGA. All requests for colposcopy should be sent to St Finbarr’s Hospital Colposcopy clinic. This is a Cervicalcheck registered clinic.
