Smears & Colposcopy

Dr. Noirin Russell is a BSCCP accredited colposcopist and works at St. Finbarr’s Hospital and Tralee General Hospital.

A cervical smear is a screening test to examine the surface cells from the cervix. If these cells are abnormal then a repeat smear may be performed or a referral for a colposcopy examination will be made. Colposcopy is a specialist examination of the cervix using a magnifying telescope, this can detect precancerous cells that will be monitored to see if they resolve spontaneously or require treatment.

We do not offer a private colposcopy service at COGA. All requests for colposcopy should be sent to St Finbarr’s Hospital Colposcopy clinic. This is a Cervicalcheck registered clinic.

We can take smears at COGA but this will involve a small fee and the results will not be registered with the national Cervicalcheck database. We therefore encourage all patients to enroll with Cervicalcheck whereby your GP will perform your smear for free.
